Hong Kong charges the lower of two amounts: progressive rates of 2%, 6%, 10%, and 14% on successive HK$50,000 bands of net chargeable income (17% on the remainder), or the two-tiered standard rate (15% on the first HK$5 million of net income and 16% above). - How is Hong Kong salaries tax calculated?
- Tax is the lower of (1) progressive rates on net chargeable income (income − deductions − allowances) and (2) the two-tiered standard rate on net income (income − deductions). The calculator works out both and applies the smaller figure.
- What is the two-tiered standard rate?
- From the 2024/25 year of assessment, the standard rate is 15% on the first HK$5 million of net income and 16% on the portion above HK$5 million.
- What is the basic allowance?
- The basic personal allowance is HK$132,000 (HK$264,000 for the married person's allowance). Child allowance and dependent parent allowance further reduce your net chargeable income.
- What deductions can I enter?
- Common deductions include mandatory MPF contributions (up to HK$18,000), approved charitable donations, self-education expenses, and home loan interest. Enter your eligible total.
