FAQ
- Which tax year does this calculator use?
- It uses the 2025 federal tax brackets and standard deduction amounts (for returns filed in 2026), based on IRS inflation adjustments.
- What is the difference between the effective and marginal tax rate?
- Your marginal rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of taxable income (the top bracket you reach). Your effective rate is your total federal income tax divided by your gross income, which is usually much lower.
- Does this include state income tax?
- No. This estimates federal income tax only. State and local income taxes vary widely by state and are not included.
- What is FICA?
- FICA is the payroll tax for Social Security (6.2% up to the annual wage base) and Medicare (1.45%, plus an additional 0.9% on high earners). You can include or exclude it using the checkbox.
